The Tony Kofi Quartet - Website
This quartet won both the Jazz Parliamentary Award and the BBC Jazz Award for the best
ensemble. Tony Kofi is a graduate of the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass.
A multi-instrumentalist, he plays all the saxes and the flute. In 1993, he became a member of The
Jazz Warriors, Courtney Pine’s seminal big band. He has performed and recorded with artists as
diverse as Claude Deppa, Julian Joseph, Branford Marsallis, Orphy Robinson and Jean Toussaint
and been part of Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop. In 2005 he won both the Jazz Parliamentary Award and
the BBC Jazz Award for the best ensemble. Pianist Jonathan Gee was voted Guardian/Wire British
Jazz Awards Most Promising Newcomer in 1991. He has worked with Art Farmer, Claire Martin,
Christine Tobin and Orphy Robinson. Bass player Ben Hazleton is regarded as one of the finest in
the business. Winston Clifford (drums) has played with many distinguished performers, including
Courtney Pine, Pete King, Jason Rabello, Julian Joseph, Ronnie Scott, Andy Sheppard, Orphy
Robinson and Jean Tousssaint.
Kofi’s musicians make a fiery, much-layered noise, but they know when to bring it down to a whisper.

Anyone who has heard the 'Big Man', three times winnder of the British Blues Award, won't want
to miss this. With his big frame and technique and he way he attacks the piano, you'd swear he
had 20 fingers on each hand - and he has the perfect blues voice. He's also a great entertainer,
whipping his audience into fits of laughter. Steve will be here with his new band, consisting of
Bob Boucher (bass),
Howard Gregory (violin/guitar) and Howard Smith on drums. It will be exciting.

Led Bib’s album, Sensible Shoes, was a winner in the 2009 Barclay’s Mercury Award Album of the
Year. New Jersey-born drummer Mark Holub began his career playing jazz, rock and free
improvisation around New York. He has studied at Berklee College, Leeds College of Music and
Middlesex University. Pete Grogan (alto sax) also graduated in jazz from Middlesex University,
whence he went via Dartington College of Arts. Israeli Liran Donin is on electric and upright bass,
Toby McClaren on keys and Chris Williams on alto sax.
You’ll be hard pressed to keep the lid on this explosive tour de force of ensemble intelligence.

Chris Jagger and the Atcha Band - Website
This powerful quintet features Chris Jagger’s acoustic guitar, vocals, washboard and song writing.
Chris has worked with many bands, including his brother’s and Leo Sayer. Musical polymath Charlie
Hart plays fiddle, accordion and piano and is known for his tight bass playing with Ian Dury, Alexis
Korner, Eric Clapton and Charlie Watts. In 1995, he received an Oscar nomination for his work on
the animation short, Triangles. Malcolm Mortimore (percussion) cut his teeth with Ian Dury. A cool
jazzman, he has worked live with Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Buddy Tate. His lad, Jim
Mortimore (electric guitar) has worked with Herbie Flowers and PP Arnold. Paul Emile (bass guitar)
has excellent timing and a great singing voice.
Jagger is a sly, sharp songwriter whose lyrics often recall the likes of Sammy Kahn more than

Elephant III - Website
This iconic band came back together again last year to do a benefit concert for the Royal Free
Hospital. Such was its success that they decided to stay together to do a CD and a festival – and
only Marlborough would do! The Elephant Six are: Paul Nieman (trombone) has performed with
many artists from a wide variety of musical disciplines, including John Dankworth, Don Rendell, Stan
Tracey, Diana Ross, George Harrison, The Stranglers, John Harle, Georgie Fame and Mike
Westbrook. Mornington Lockett (sax) has played in the bands of Jim Mullen, Stan Tracey, Don
Weller and Clark Tracey. He is best-known for his work with Ronnie Scott, which continues to manifest
itself in Celebrating the Jazz Couriers: a collaboration with Ronnie’s drummer, Martin Drew. The band
won ‘Best Small Group’ in the 2002 BBC Jazz Awards. Marc Parnell toured the world with Joan
Armatrading, has worked with Theo Travis, Dave O’Higgins, Lianne Carroll and Annie Ross and
appeared on Top Gear with a drum-set made entirely of car parts. Steve Lodder (keys) has worked
with Andy Sheppard, John Harle, Elvis Costello, Simply Red and Frank Zappa. A musical associate
of Paul McCartney, he produced and premiered an organ version of his choral/orchestra work,
Ecce Cormium. Leading session musician Robin Clayton (bass guitar) is a graduate of Boston’s
fabled Berklee College of Music. He has worked with Donovan, Elaine Page, Judy Collins and Des
O’Connor. Josefina Cupido completes the sextet on vocals and percussion.
Lodder is both an improviser of originality and a musical thinker of erudition and depth.

This unique combination features West African highlife, South African Township and Calypso, Soca
and Reggae from the Caribbean. The band is fronted by Ben Baddo, master drummer, balafon player
and dancer from Ghana, delivering a potent combination of driving rhythm and subtle vocals. He has
guested with many fine artists, including Peter Gabriel. Zambian Simi Zeko is on vocals and guitar.
Brendon Whitmore is on tenor and soprano sax, flute, harmonica and vocals. Royston Gage from
Dominica is on vocals and bass and Mark Bradley on drums.

Come and spot the jazz stars of tomorrow! Since its founding, in 1965, by Bill Ashton, MBE, the
NYJO has built a world-wide reputation as a glittering showcase for the UK’s best young jazz
musicians. Many of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks.
Players begin their careers in the NYJO in the NYJO2, which is largely made up of under 18-year
olds. They work under the close specialist supervision of trumpeter Paul Eshelby (Ella Fitzgerald,
Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey, Harry Connick, jnr, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins) and Director Mark
Horton. Their performance spans a huge range – from Bossa to My Funny Valentine. Nora
McCarthy (see below) will be joining NYJO2 to sing a few numbers.

The highly promising WSP features pianist Dave Morecroft, who has worked with Julian Arguelles,
Dennis Rollins and Leafcutter John. Raphael Clarkson (trombone and sackbut) is studying for an
M.Phil in Musicology at Oxford University. Tim Ower is on sax, Neil Blandford (drums) and Conor
Chaplin on bass guitar.

Vocalist, composer and poet, Nora McCarthy, is an important force on the New York jazz scene.
She has toured with the rhythm and blues legend, Wilson Pickett

The Geoff Eales Trio - Website
Geoff Eales obtained a doctorate in music from Cardiff University in 1973, but, rather than entering
the safe haven of academe, he adopted the more exciting and hazardous course of becoming a
professional musician. His choice has been fully vindicated. The list of those he has worked with
reads like the Pantheon: Henry Mancini, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rosemary Clooney, Tammy Wynette,
Shirley Bassey, Andy Williams, Kiri TeKanawa, Jose Carreras and the rest. He has appeared at New
York’s legendary Birdland and numerous other top locations. Bassist Paul Morgan has worked
with the BBC Big Band, Mike d’Abo, Elvis Costello, Alexis Korner, Barbara Thompson, Keith Tippett
and Mike Westbrook. Mark Fletcher is on drums.

Michael Roach - Website
The 11th of 13 children from Washington DC, Michael Roach sings and plays the guitar in an
East Coast style of blues that dates back to the 1920s. He learnt everything he knows about the
blues from some of the last personal bearers of the older traditions. His noted Radio 4 series
explored the roots of the music he loves. This fine artist has dedicated his life to the music and
history of the blues.
Teddy White’s Pignose
Anish Harrison, vocals and 2-string bass in this exciting trio, has been described as a young Janis
Joplin. Teddy White aka Pete Cousins (guitar and vocals) is generally regarded as the finest thing to
come out of Swindon since Diana Dors. Peter O’Driscoll is on bongos and foot drum and contributes to
the vocals.
The Kit Downes Trio - Website
This highly-rated trio has performed at the London Jazz Festival, Pizza Express and the Vortex.
Kit Downes won the BBC ‘Rising Star’ award in 2008. He has already played with such noted artists
as Gilad Atzman, Clark Tracey, Empirical, Gerard Presencer and Acoustic Ladyland and performed
at the North Sea, New York, Montreal and Newport RI Festivals. Calum Gourlay on bass has worked
with Tommy Smith, Martin Speake and Tom Cawley. James Maddren is on drums.
Kit Downes is about to emerge as a formidable force in his own right…his originals were haunting,

The Ray Butcher Sextet - Website
NYJO graduate Ray Butcher (trumpet) has performed with many of the top names, including King
Pleasure, BB King, Jean Toussiant and Liam Noble. Miles Levin (drums) has done a week-long stint
at Ronnie Scott’s. Adam Gilchrist (bass) has performed with Guy Barker, Gerard Presencer and
Julian Arguelles. Russian saxophonist, Oleg Kiryjev has performed at manty festivals, including
Birmingham, Ealing and Montreux, where he was awarded a diploma for outstanding performance.
Ian Hill (sax), Tim Amann (keys) complete the quintet.
Oleg's playing is a marvellous combination of styles, incorporating a whole lot of players.

Sensations on the Latin Beat! Felix Gibbons has played alongside an array of top Brazilian pop
artists, some of the great samba stars – and Gilad Atzman, Peter Gabriel, Tina May and Pee Wee
Ellis– and the Glastonbury, Montreux and Womad Festivals. His percussion mainly concentrates on
Afro-Brazilian rhythms, especially carnival rhythms from all over Brazil and also contextualised
technique for the Salsa instruments: conga, bongo, timbales, guiro, clave and maraca. Fabão
Allman is a singer and instrumentalist from the Rio Carnival’s fabled Monobloco street band. It is
their performance in Copacabanca that marks the end of Carnival. Singer and guitarist, Pepê
Barcellos, mixes the Brazilian rhythms of the samba, bossa nova and baiao with the contemporary
influences of funk, rock and soul. The trio will be wearing their costumes from the Rio Carnival.
They are joined by Greg Cordez (bass) who has played with Andy Sheppard, Pee Wee Ellis,
Massive Attack, Cameron Pierre and Clark Tracey and appeared at Ronnie Scott’s, the 606 Club,
the Barbican and the Glastonbury and Montreux Festivals. The quintet is completed by Iain Houston
on reeds Unmissable!

This band has supported both George Melly and Courtney Pine. It features Dave Shattock on
piano, Jan Evans on drums, Sonny James Lovell is on guitar and Andy Collins contributes double
bass and vocals.
Gabby Young’s Acoustic Set - Website
Marlborough’s treasure, acoustic vocalist Gabby, appears with cello and double bass. Since last year
amongst many other places, she has appeared at the prestigious South by South Music Festival.
The Shez Raja Collective - Website The Shez Raja Collective was formed with the intention of creating exciting and unique multi-genre
music. As a result of performances at such prestigious locations as the Jazz Café and the Isle of
Wight Jazz Festival (and now Marlborough!) they have acquired a devoted following. The sign of a
band on the way up is where they are playing at such places as the Bath, Isle of Wight and
St Petersburg Jazz Festivals, Pizza Express and, of course Marlborough. The eponymous
Shez Raja is on bass Kiwi violinist, Pascal Roggen, won the ‘Young Jazz Musician of the Year’
Award at the Tauranga National Jazz Festival in 1997. He has played WOMAD Las Palmas, the
Havana International Jazz Festival, the BAFTA Award Ceremony, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and
the Sydney Opera House. Alex Stanford (keys) has worked with Lianne Carroll, Alec Dankworth,
Dave Green, Geoff Gascoyne and Jean Toussaint. Aaron Liddard is lead saxophonist and composer
with the London Jazz Collective. The noted Chris Nickolls is on drums

Twice voted Instrumentalist of the Year at the annual British Blues Festival, Bob has worked with such
famed artists as John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Alexis Korner, Mike Fleetwood, Charlie Watts and
Paul Jones. Hilary Bligh adds bass guitar and vocals, Top Topham (guitar) was an original member
of the Yardbirds.

A quintet of Wiltshire-based musicians brings a fusion of West Coast sound with a cocktail of jazz,
Latino, country and rock influences. The band features singer Heidy C. Rue, Mike Booth (vocals,
rhythm guitar), Mark Hancock (bass, vocals), Ian Jackson (vocals, lead guitar) and Colin Palmer
on drums.
